Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk issues response to boo boys

Sheffield Wednesday slumped to fourth straight league game without a victory on Saturday afternoon and as a result, they were booed off the pitch. Now, Owls boss Garry Monk has had his say.

What’s he said?

The south Yorkshire derby at Oakwell ended in a 1-1 stalemate as very little separated the two teams.

Wednesday had taken an early lead through debutant Josh Windass firing past the home goalkeeper in the 16th minute, but that it didn’t last long as Cauley Woodrow capitalised on Cameron Dawson’s failed clearance to tie things up moments later.

There were to be no more goals in the match despite Monk fielding an attacking lineup which also contained Connor Wickham.

After the full-time whistle went, the travelling faithful voiced their anger to which the 40-year-old has responded. Asked if he could understand the reaction, Monk said:

“Yeah, of course. We all want to win. We put ourselves in a good position to win the game by going a goal up.

“We were disappointed to concede in the way we did because we had given ourselves a good foothold at that point. It changed the course of the game a little bit.”“This is a big job, there’s a lot of things that need to be corrected to move forward. Everyone is frustrated, I’m frustrated we’re in a patch where we’re not coming out the right side of it.“Every player is fighting for their future and you have to feel that at a football club. We’re not going to give up, we’ll stick together.”Garry Monk, Owls boss.

Poor form

Wednesday’s playoff hopes are in tatters as they have now endured a run of eight matches with just one victory. It has left them sitting some six points off Preston North End in sixth place.

A couple of months ago, Monk had got his side sitting pretty in the promotion picture – they were even as high as third at one stage and given West Brom and Leeds’ collapse over the turn of the year, they’ll be rueing their recent poor form.

It is hard to pinpoint exactly where things have gone ever so wrong for the Owls, but time will need to be given to the manager as it was only the first game that the majority of his January signings were able to feature and in terms of longevity, this job is one that will extend far beyond the next four months.

Are you a Championship expert? How much did each of these big-money signings cost?

Several players are out of contract this summer, several more have been at Hillsborough for the best part of half a decade and less than a handful are players the manager has actually signed himself.
